Each week we have a tip that just may help a kid have a little more fun in the outdoors

 

When sitting down to wait for a turkey do not set up facing directly at the point in which you think the turkey will come. If you are right handed set up angled 45 degrees off of your left shoulder. This will allow you to move either way if the turkey does not come straight in.

 

When starting a new angler to fly fishing, a good way to help them start catching fish is to have them use a strike indicator.

 

Before heading out on a trip it is a good idea to make a check list to help you remember all of those little things that may make the difference of successful trip.

 

When kids are just learning to call and they do not feel proficient enough to call on their own have them call with you. You can be the primary caller and they can be a second caller. Sometimes the extra caller will make the difference.

If you want to speed up your time when cleaning fish try an electric fillet knife. This is an investment that will last a long time and make the cleaning process much more enjoyable.

 

When elk hunting a quick way to identify which one is a bull is to look at body color. The bulls are a much lighter, almost creamy color. This will help you quickly decide which one to look at first with your optics to check for legal horns.

 

When having kids learn how to fish with lures have them let out just a little line and slowly pull it through the water so they can watch it. This will help them visualize how it is suppose to react down in the deep water.

 

Before taking kids upland bird hunting they need to practice a little to feel comfortable and build some confidence. After this take them dove hunting this will get them use to all the same skills they will need come pheasant and duck season.

If you have a child that wants to start fishing and you are not that familiar with fishing your self, a good way to start out is at a kids fishing event. Many F&G depts and other organizations sponsor such events.

 

When taking a kid big game hunting one of the most difficult things is holding the gun steady. Always use some type of rest, there are many bipods you can buy or you can easily fabricate something, if nothing else rest on a backpack. When using a rest remember it can not be hard, and rest the stock not the barrel on the rest. Either of these will usually cause the barrel to jump and shoot high.

 

When taking a young angler stream fishing have them wade slightly in to the current when crossing a stream.

 

When taking kids on any outing remember they tire quickly. A seat is a big help, a bucket with a seat is a good way to take along some drinks and snacks.

Learning to tie fishing knots can be frustrating for any new angler. A good way to practice is with some 1/8" cord and any tool with a hole in the end. After practicing with these it is much easier with mono filament

 

When wading boots with a soft sole will not slip as much as a rubber bottom boot. An inexpensive way to make some for your child is to trace the boot pattern on a piece of carpet and glue it on. You can also buy ready made felt sole kits.

 

A basic first aid kit is invaluable when out in the field. Keep one in your vehicles, boats , 4 wheelers, and a small one in your pack. A minor cut to you might seem major to a kid.

 

Outdoor activities require varied amounts of clothing through out the day. Layering is the only way to have a chance to be comfortable from daylight to dark. If kids are cold they are not having fun.

 

When fishing make it a habit to check the last three feet of your line on a regular basis. This is where the majority of abrasions occur. Once detected cut off and retie, this will help alleviate the sad face after the big one broke off.
